OneDrive, SharePoint and Exchange Online include useful retention and recovery features, but businesses should not assume that using Microsoft 365 automatically solves every backup requirement. Cloud availability and independent data recovery are related, but they are not the same thing.
Retention is not always a backup strategy
Deleted items, version history and retention policies can help recover mistakes, but they operate within the same service and configuration. A deliberate backup strategy starts by identifying what data must be recoverable and for how long.
Account compromise changes the picture
If an attacker gains sufficient access, they may be able to delete information, alter retention settings or disrupt user access. Independent backups reduce dependence on a single account or service boundary.
Recovery objectives matter
Ask two questions: how much data can the business afford to lose, and how quickly must it be restored? Those answers determine whether standard recovery tools are enough or whether a separate backup platform is justified.
Test the restore process
Do not assume recovery will work because a service is configured. Periodic tests confirm that the right mailboxes, SharePoint sites and OneDrive data can actually be recovered in the way the business expects.
A simple next step
Kazzoo can review Microsoft 365 data protection and help you decide where native recovery is enough and where an independent backup makes sense.
